1.3 Learning across levels of the system
Learning can occur at multiple levels of a health system. Exploring these levels will be the first of three main components of the learning health systems framework that we will explore in its entirety later in the course.
Regardless of the level, it is ultimately people who are learning – either individually or as teams or groups of other sizes. In the following short, animated video, we will look at four important levels of learning within health systems and how these can feed learning in different directions and serve different kinds of purposes for gathering and using information.
Hopefully the video has added to your practical understanding of what kind of information is used for learning and how it is used across levels. Below is the full figure (Figure 1) that is broken down and described in the video with all four levels and the associated flows of learning and uses of information for your reference. In summary, learning at the individual and team levels does not require institutionalization/routinization/integration, while at organizational and cross-organizational levels, it usually does.
